Boule, which is based on the very old French game of “jeu Provençal”, is truly Provencal and reflects the laidback lifestyle of the southern parts of France. On 27 December 1966, Grimaldi Castle was turned into the « Picasso Museum ». The building was exten- sively renovated between 2006 and 2008.
In 1925 it was acquired by the City of Antibes. In 1946, Picasso, who was living nearby in Golfe-Juan with Françoise Gilot, accepted curator Dor de la Souchère’s offer to set up his studio in the Castle. Picasso worked from mid September through mid November of 1946, creating many works, sketches and paintings, including Les Clés d’Antibes (The Keys of Antibes), covering an entire wall surface. When the artist decided to move back to Paris, he left 23 paintings and 44 sketches in the Castle’s custody.
The first independent art foundation in France, they conceived it in collaboration with the Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert in 1964. Their artist friends personally participated in its conception and realization, each appropriating a space in the future foundation. Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger all found it to be an ideal place of creation, where the rooms and gardens interact in perfect harmony.
Jazz à Juan is a seaside festival with all the biggest names in Jazz, taking place in July every year at the Gould Pine Grove in Juan-les-Pins. As the oldest jazz festival in Europe, Jazz in Juan remains an amazing melting pot where different trends all blend together. Many performers have trodden the boards of the stage in the mythical pine grove since its creation in 1960. The festival has established itself as one of the legendary places where jazz history was made and is eternally renewed through young prodigies like Marcus Miller, Wynton Marsalis, Salif Keita, Diana Krall, James Carter and Joshua Redman.

Almost twenty golf courses offer 18-holes and about fifteen sites have 9 hole golf courses. With its fifteen ski resorts, the Alpes Maritimes offers a total of 460 km downhill ski slopes and 153 km of cross-country ski runs. Auron, Isola 2000 and Valberg stands out as the resorts with the largest area but there are several hidden gems off the track to explore and enjoy.

Mountainbiking in Alpes Maritimes is one of the best ways to explore this beautiful region, so rich with amazing scenery. There are several excellent routes to choose from in order to get an excellent ride – it all depends on your location and skills. Most trails range between thirty to eighty kilometers, so it is up to you!
